Mr. Copsey's letter for students/parents

Important Information & Dates:

This year, SMCPS will cover the cost of AP (Advanced Placement) exams for all students interested in taking the assessments connected to their Advanced Placement coursework. Students will need to select their AP tests by October 31st, 2023. Please consult your AP teacher(s) if you are uncertain about taking the exam associated with their course(s).

Please make note of the following:

  • If you choose to take an AP test and then change your mind after the October 31st deadline, please contact Ms. Bridges (kjbridges@smcps.org) as soon as possible to have your test canceled. You may be required to pay a fee for test cancellation ($40).

  • If, after the October 31st deadline, you decide to take an AP exam for which you are not registered, you will be charged the late order fee ($40).

  • Failure to sit for an AP exam you have ordered on the original assessment date may result in a late testing fee ($40) if you wish to take the make-up exam.

  • If you do not sit for an AP exam you ordered, you will be required to repay that test's fee ($98 for regular exams, $146 for Capstone exams) and the unused/canceled exam fee ($40) to SMCPS.

Beginning September 5, 2023, students may start registering for AP exams.

AP Classroom & Registering for Exams

All AP students must create a College Board account and enroll in their AP class section for each of their AP courses (students who already have College Board accounts should not create new accounts). Do not use your SMCPS email to create a College Board account. Use a personal email address to create your account.

  •  Please click on the following link for directions on how to join an AP class section-  Joining an AP Class

  • Students should enroll in their AP class section by September 15, 2023.

  • Students who do not enroll in their AP class section by October 31, 2023 will be subject to a $40 late fee if they still intend to take an AP exam.

  • Students must indicate their exam status by selecting “yes” or “no” in their College Board account (students must do this for each AP course that they are enrolled in).

Paying Fees:

--$40 Late Registration/Order Fee: Pay using MySchoolBucks

This would apply to any student who:

  • Does not enroll in their AP class section & register to take the exam via their College Board account by October 31, 2023.

  • Does not sit for an exam they have ordered on the original exam date and wishes to take the make-up exam

  • Cancels an exam after October 31, 2023

  • This fee is per exam. For example, if a student decides after October 31 they wish to take 2 AP exams, they will be charged $80.

--$98 exam fee/$146 Capstone fee (AP Seminar or AP Research): Pay using MySchoolBucks

  • This would apply to any student who does not sit for an AP exam they ordered..
  • These students would also need to pay the $40 unused exam fee for each exam
  • This fee is per exam. For example, if a student signs up for 2 exams and does not show up for either exam, they will be charged $276 ($196 dollars in exam fees and $80 in late fees)

Deadline to Register:

●        Any student who wishes to take an AP exam in May 2024 must enroll in their AP class section for each of their AP courses (students who already have college board accounts should not create new accounts)  (exams ordered after 10/31/2023 & before 3/15/24 will be subject to a $40 late fee).
